MCAS 1998, 10th Grade Math, Questions 37 to 39

Question #37

a. Draw all of the possible lines of symmetry in each of the three triangles above.

b. Write an if—then statement for each triangle above showing the relationship between the sides and the lines of symmetry.

Question #38

a. Using the patterns above, describe or draw the closed 3-dimensional figure that will be formed by folding the patterns on the dashed lines. If it is not possible to make a closed 3-dimensional figure, state the reason(s) why.

b. Make a pattern for a different closed 3-dimensional figure. Name and draw the geometric shape.

Question #39

To make a house handicapped accessible, a ramp is being constructed to the floor of a porch. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that a ramp have an incline of no more than 5°.

Assume that the maximum allowable angle is used and that the floor of the porch to which the ramp is constructed is 4 feet above ground. (You may refer to the trigonometric table on your Mathematics Reference Sheet.)

a. Draw and label a picture showing the ramp and the porch.

b. Based on the information above, how far is the end of the ramp from the porch? Show your work.

c. Based on the information above, what is the length of the ramp? Show your work.
